The Guard House sits within the Garrison on St Mary’s and enjoys panoramic views of the harbour and the islands of Samson, Bryher, Tresco and St Martin’s.
Dating back to the early-17th century, The Guard House was originally constructed next to the Garrison’s main gated entrance. Located within the Elizabethan walls, it makes a perfect base for exploring the unrivalled natural beauty of the islands.
The Guard House has a welcoming open-plan sitting room/dining kitchen with a wood burner in a large granite fireplace and comfortable furniture. There’s also a TV, DVD player, Roberts Radio and board games.
The dining kitchen contains an electric cooker and ceramic hob, a fridge freezer, washer and dryer, dishwasher and full range of modern cookware, crockery, glassware and cookbooks.
The cottage has two bedrooms: a double bedroom with a super king bed and a twin bedroom. Both have lovely sea views and comfortable beds with Egyptian cotton bed linen.
A family bathroom has a bath with overhead shower, a WC, wash basin and heated towel rail.
The Guard House nestles against the Elizabethan Garrison walls and has a private garden terrace, formerly a cannon battery, with garden furniture, a barbecue, and panoramic views of the harbour and off islands.
“My family spent a wonderful week at this fabulous property. The furnishings are superb, sofas very comfortable after a day exploring the Scillies. The terrace overlooking the sea is just perfect and we enjoyed many an evening watching the boats pass by.”

The Guard House is located within the historic Garrison above Hugh Town, the main town on St Mary’s. As the largest of Scilly’s islands, St Mary’s has plenty to see and do, with shops, pubs and restaurants just a short walk away.
Stay and enjoy the natural beauty of the island’s beaches and footpaths, or hop on a boat and head over to one of the off islands. On Tresco, you’ll find the subtropical Abbey Garden while St Agnes has spots ideal for shell collecting.
